Employees of Premium Standard Farms LLC Provide Major Gift of Disaster Response Trailers

Press release from the Midland Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross.

St. Joseph, Mo., -  Employees of Premium Standard Farms, LLC, are helping the American Red Cross with disaster preparations by making a donation for the purchase of three Disaster Supply Trailers.  The donation of $7,125 funded the three trailers.  The Red Cross will fill the trailers with response supplies that will be used to care for people immediately after a disaster.  The trailers will be placed in the counties of Mercer, Daviess and Gentry counties.

Seven counties in northwest Missouri had received Disaster Supply Trailers as part of a Homeland Security Grant to the Midland Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross in St. Joseph, Mo.  When Mercer, Daviess and Gentry counties did not receive trailers, Premium Standard Farms sought to ensure residents of those counties were able to have access to the quick response supply trailers in their counties.

"As employees of Premium Standard Farms, we are very proud of the communities where we work, live, and raise our families," stated Bill Homann, President of Premium Standard Farms, LLC.  "Wherever we can, we believe it is our responsibility to pitch in and support our neighbors and help meet critical local needs."

The goal of the Red Cross is to be able to shelter 10% of the population in the counties after the trailers are placed in northwest Missouri.   "While outside help and supplies would be provided as soon as possible, we would like the local communities to have the basic supplies and equipment to care for people immediately after a disaster and up to seventy-two hours without outside help," stated Karla Long, Emergency Services Director, Midland Empire Chapter.

Response will now be immediate because of the readiness and mobility of the trailers.  A Disaster Supply Trailer provides the basic materials to open any shelter including registration forms, signage, hygiene items, diapers, first aid supplies and many more items to open a shelter which provides a safe place to stay.

"Our wish would be to provide all people with cots or floor pads and blankets immediately at all shelters.  For the healthy and younger people looking for the safety of our shelters, cots or floors mats and blankets are luxury for the first hours in times of disaster.  But for the older, sick or injured persons, cots or mats and blankets are a must and a 100 cots or floor pads with blankets will be available immediately on each trailer," stated Long.

The Disaster Supply Trailers will be staged in the three counties.  If the disaster is in one area and other counties are not affected, all trailers can be brought together quickly to concentrate relief in one area.  If the disaster affects all three counties, the county emergency manager of each county will place the trailer based on the greatest critical need.

These supplies would be accessible to County Emergency Managers and American Red Cross volunteers in the counties.  They would be activated by a request from an authorized emergency manager, law enforcement officer, fire department official, or by the appropriate elected official.  In times when disasters affect Kansas or Missouri counties other than the three indicated, the trailers and volunteers could respond to help their neighbors.  This approach will strengthen the disaster response in all of northeast Kansas and northwest Missouri.
