High Plains W-F System
Boiler Methane gas fuels the boiler, which sends heat back to the digester.
Maintaining a constant warm temperature in the digester increases efficiency and effectiveness. More waste is digested in less time.
Digester Volatile organic material is converted to methane gas, which is used to fuel the boiler. The
impermeable cover on the digester captures the gas and prevents odors from escaping.
Aeration Once the majority of the organic material is digested, the liquid flows to the aeration basin.
Here, the effluent is mechanically aerated, providing oxygen needed by microorganisms that further reduce odors.
Bio-Solids Microorganisms that grow in aeration settle and are stored here. The
bio-solids are removed every few years for land application.
Storage The clearer liquid that flows from the bio-solids basin is stored and used to irrigate crops. Water pulled from the aquifer is used three times. Once to water the animals, a second time to fill
the pits in the barns and finally to irrigate crops once it has been treated.
