High Plains S-5 System
IRP Effluent flows from the barns and through the Internal Recirculation Process (IRP) where it is concentrated from 0.25 percent solids to 8.0
percent solids. The coarse material is separated from the liquid, which is chemically treated to control odor and recycled to flush the barns.
Boiler Methane gas fuels the boiler, which sends heat back to the
digester. Maintaining a constant warm temperature in the digester increases efficiency and effectiveness. More waste is digested in less time.
Digester Volatile organic material in the 0.8 percent solids slurry
is converted to methane gas, which is used to fuel the boiler. The impermeable cover on the digester captures the gas and prevents odors from escaping.
Aeration Once the majority of the organic material is digested, the
liquid flows to an aeration basin. Here the effluent is mechanically aerated providing oxygen needed by microorganisms that further reduce odors.
Evaporation Evaporation capitalizes on the arid climate in the high
plains. This basin allows the treated water to evaporate, eliminating the need for irrigation or further treatment.
